When Beau Borrero and his Mom’s debut album ‘Well’ landed in my mailbox, I was having a rough day of sorting through a large quantity of bad-to-much-worse, & sometimes downright laughable hip-hop.  After the opening notes of  Beau’s ‘Mr. Archangel’, I was mildly surprised and somewhat interested, but a few bars later, I was leaning closer.  The back-up vocals by his Mom are perfectly balanced; her voice is soothing and melodious.  They are amazingly attuned to each other’s style, and in the live performances I’ve seen on video, they bring a spark of fun in their jokes at life’s journey.>
I was more than happy to listen through to the very end of the album, all the way to ‘Stupid’, which had my whole family cracking up, and finishing with ‘Rise up! #Occupy Wall St.’, which is wonderfully sarcastic and right on in it’s national and global message that we need hardcore political reform.  From the smooth tones of the harp,  cello, and lush backing vocals,  to the rugged rhythm of a washboard, along with staples like the guitar and banjo, “Well” has the widest palate of any album I have heard in a long time .  With an underlying tone of folksy-blues and a variety of tunes that bounce genres faster than politicians pocket their perks, it’s hard to pin a certain style on this Mom and Son duo.
You can feel the love and laughter at life and it’s hard lessons in the beautifully crafted lyrics.  This album is a journey of self portraits that tells you much about Beau’s sweet and vulnerable side, as well as his sincere desire to advocate for change in his own life, America and the world!  This is not only music, but poetry in motion – that also gets your feet moving and makes you feel great.  It is a good album to play at the end of a hard day!

CD Reviews: January 2012 – Beau Borrero – Well
Posted by Cameron Deuel on 1/12/12 • Categorized as January 2012

Former Flowmotion member Beau Borrero has just released his debut album Well. Borrero showcases 10 songs on the album using harmonious combinations of classical guitar picking, harps, electric guitars, strings, fluid vocals and more.

The album has a James Taylor feel to it different from Beau’s former sound in Flowmotion which is more upbeat. This album pours out from speakers with a smooth, melees and clean sound; songs like “Daydream Lover” and “Something I Can Keep” especially retain a James Taylor feel. The last song on the album, “Stupid”, is a cute song but sounds like it belongs on a children’s television show.

Overall, the album shows maturity from Beau’s previous works as part of Flowmotion. It’s a soft and eloquent album that’s worth going to see live for a romantic evening.

Good show, Beau!

Beau It was cool to spend the last week listening to Beau Borrero’s new CD, “Well.”

Most of his songs tell a story of the fun of love, balanced with the hopefulness of it, as well as the awkwardness that always seems to accompany it (in his song Stupid, he says he’s so in love his heart leaps up to squirt his brain out his ears). He has a poet’s ear for both the rhythms and rhymes that make a song do that magic thing you hope for: Draw a picture that is clear & easy to get your head & heart around. He uses the first person all the way through, which makes his personal connection to what he’s saying that much more direct…it works, as he connects to love (If I Had You, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Daydream Lover), as he connects to dreams & visions & the past (I’m Gonna Fly), as he connects to the darker part of his heart (Archangel – “I could use some help with this part of the game”) and as he connects the cello-underlined loss of love (Hole in My Heart).

Start by listening to songs on th website…. Beau seems to be a natural with the production values of the collection – the set is well-mixed & recorded, which makes it easier to listen to than most first-time albums I’ve heard. His acoustic guitar-based tunes make effective & sparing use of piano, banjo, dobro, cello, mandolin, even a harp with backup vocals that give each song its own voice. His warm, clear voice wraps the words in a baritone blanket that is easy to hear again & over again. You can hear samples on his website…check him out!
